Mutton Cooking Tip From Mom!

All chicken recipes are applicable for the cooking of mutton.

  1. Mutton from the butcher may require some extra cleaning to wash away possible impurities and even to reduce the gamey smell. Wash the mutton with regular water. Then add some white vinegar (1 tbsp for 1.5kg mutton) and turmeric powder (1/2 tsp) and mixed in the muttton well before washing it again. You can wash it another time for good measure. Drain the mutton and remove as much of the moisture before cooking especially for the drier varuvel dishes.


  1. It is advisable to pre-cook / pressure cook marinated mutton before proceeding with the recipes. Using the Philips all-in-one cooker, pressure cook on 'meat' for 30 minutes.


  2. If mutton is tender and there is too much gravy / stock, separate the meat from the gravy . Then after crackling spices and adding onion with ginger-garlic mix, pour in gravy and let simmer till the gravy thickens before adding in meat.


  3. Then continue as in the rest of the recipe.
